In November will be exploring some of the themes that run through the Bhagavad Gita and how we can use these ideas in a yoga class and take away the lessons that the classic Indian Spirituality is teaching us.

The different themes will be non-attachment and riding the waves in our life. We will look at the Three Gunas with their attributes – tamas (stability), rajas (activity),and sattva (consciousness), they are the ways that we respond to any situation that arises.

We will explore what are our divine qualities that can develop and lead us into happiness and wisdom. Finally the last class will look at Jnana Yoga which is known as the Way of the Wisdom. It is the process of recognising the truth and then merging with it.

The Five Niyamas - Svadhyaya

The theme for the next couple of months is from the Five Niyamas, you can have a look at the video above but Svadhyaya translates directly from Sanskrit and it's literal meaning is self-study. It has the potential to deepend our yoga practice beyond the mat.

The study of sacred texts such as The Bhagavad Gita, The Upanishads, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and The Hatha Yoga Pradipika allows us to develop the study of the self (self knowledge). This self awareness allows us to re-address and balance our lives which leads to a deeper awareness of the Self or soul.

Suggested Reading

If you're at a bit of a loose end and have some time, it would be a really good opportunity for you to have a read of the Bhagavad Gita, which has been translated and made more accessible by Eknath Easwaran. If you've got a local bookshop near you, give them a ring, they might be able to order it for you.
