In line with our theme of the seven chakras, the next four weeks we will use poses, breathing and visualisation/relaxation techniques to tap into our throat chakra.

The throat chakra is also known as Vishuddha Chakra, and is situated at the base of the throat. This chakra is associated with speaking up and being able to express yourself, and connects with hearing and being heard. It acts as the body’s communication hub and is associated with truth and clarity.

It operates through verbal communication and our ability to speak our truth. If the energy can’t flow freely in this area it often can be difficult to find the words to communicate and express how we are feeling.

Yoga can be a great way to work with your throat chakra, certain poses will allow you to open up your shoulders and release the tension from your neck. Lots of movement to focus on the throat, neck, jaw and upper body as we open and stimulate the flow of energy into that space.

June – Vishuddha (Throat Chakra)

Colour – Blue
Element – Sound, ether
Location – Cervical vertebrae, neck, throat

Related Body Parts – Shoulders, neck, throat, tongue, mouth and ears
Postures to Work With – Shoulder openers and openers for the throat

Properties – Harmony, creativity, resonance, coherence and truth

Week 1 – Release neck, jaw and shoulder tension - We can carry a lot of tension in the neck which can result in headaches, hunched shoulders and bad posture. Help to alleviate pain, tension and tightness in the upper body area and the neck and jaw though yoga.
Week 2 – Stimulating thyroid – Focus will be on the head and the neck while stimulating the thyroid gland which creates space and balance for the throat chakra. Yoga can be a great natural way to regulate healthy thyroid functioning.

Week 3 – Expression and communication – Our ability to speak up for ourselves and communicate more clearly is said to reside in the throat chakra. As we open up into the space around the head and neck more energy can flow freely in the throat chakra area.

Week 4 – Truth and clarity – As we work to open up the throat chakra the energy that flows into that space allows us to find our voice and speak more confident with clarity and honesty and ultimately speaking our highest truth.

Our body is an instrument played by divine breath. It is our job to keep the instrument well tuned and to listen to the voice of truth moving through us.
